Dear Ms. Marian Mainland,
My name is Maria Zazzarino, a clinician with the Best Program at the George Hull Centre for Children and Families. The George Hull Centre is a non-profit children’s mental health centre funded through the Ministry of Community and Social Services. The Best Program is a Prevention and Early Intervention program for at risk families with children under 6 years of age. The goal is to work collaboratively with families and service providers facilitating healthy child development, parent-child interactions and adult development within a supportive competency based environment.
The Best Program has been using the DISC for over 10 years. We have found it to be an extremely useful tool in screening children who are referred to our program.
The DISC is a comprehensive tool outlining 8 domains of a child’s basic developmental area. It provides valuable information about the child’s level of functioning and in identifying the child’s strengths and developmental needs. The results from the DISC are useful in developing recommendations and in providing strategies to parents. This information is compiled into a straightforward and detailed report which is shared with the family in order to support them in implementing the necessary recommendations.
The DISC is regarded as an essential tool in our work with children and their families. It helps us determine and support referrals to our Consulting Psychiatrist, Child Development Centre, Speech and Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, and other disciplines.
The DISC is versatile and can be administered in various settings such as our office, the family home or community setting. It has the flexibility to allow for two separate screening dates which is beneficial given the needs of the children and families we work with.
The DISC has become well received from our professional community whereby many pediatricians and outside agencies often request the DISC to support their work with families.
I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss this further.
